The former director of the Institute for Solar Physics (KIS), Wolfgang Mattig (1927–2018), was an astronomer, solar physicist and non-tenured professor at Freiburg University.

The anthology “Astronomy in the GDR”, published as part of the Astronomical Society’s Acta Historica Astronomiae series (Vol. 75), has now devoted an entire chapter to Mr Mattig (in German language).

The authors, Wolfgang Schmidt and Michael Sigwarth, formerly conducted research and worked at the Institute of Solar Physics (KIS) for many years.
