The objective of this proposal is further improve the physical realism of the FIRTEZ Stokes inversion code so as to accurately infer electric currents in the solar chromosphere. This is of particular importance because, in this layer of the solar atmosphere, electric currents play a very important role in the energetics of the plasma, and because electric currents are indicative of non-potential configuratations of the magnetic field. These non-potential configurations are more likely to lead to magnetic reconnection, and thus also to energetic events such as flares and coronal mass ejections (see figure below) that can severely affect Earth's upper atmosphere, thereby causing many disruptions to our technological society.
