KIS is a foundation under public law of the state of Baden-Württemberg and a member of the Leibniz Association. Its mission is to conduct fundamental astrophysical research with a focus on solar physics. Current research foci are 1) dynamic solar atmosphere, 2) the Sun among stars, and 3) Instruments, Techniques and Data. KIS operates the German solar telescopes at the Teide Observatory on Tenerife, Spain, and the Science Data Center (SDC) in Freiburg, Germany. KIS leads and participates in several EU cooperation projects and contributes advanced instrumentation to the world's largest solar telescope (DKIST, 4m) on Maui, USA.
The SDC is a new project at KIS aiming to (1) provide a common platform for the solar community to curate, archive, disseminate and analyse solar data produced by various scientific instruments and, (2) carry out scientific research focused on the development of new diagnosis tools for high-resolution solar imaging and spectro-polarimetric data.
For a further development of SDC, KIS is looking for a scientist to work on the development of innovative high-level data analysis tools for solar data with the following tasks:
- development and application of image reconstruction and analysis tools for high-resolution imaging data,
- development and application of inversion techniques for multi-wavelength high-resolution spectro-polarimetric data,
- development and application of statistical tools to archived data,
The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the KIS scientists.
The applicant must be in possession of a PhD degree in physics or astrophysics, or another related field, as well as
- knowledge and experience in polarized radiative transfer, polarimetric measurements and inversion techniques for solar/stellar data,
- knowledge and experience in programming using Python and code development in different languages,
- good communication skills, capacity of working in a team and in an interdisciplinary environment.
Knowledge and experience in the use of machine learning, deep learning and other AI techniques.
The position is located in Freiburg, Germany. The appointment will be a full-time position for a term of two years or longer, depending on work performance and funding, and according to German legislation. The salary and benefits are according to the rules for government employees of the State of Baden-Württemberg (TV-L).
