The Diversity of the Sun

An image of the sun in visible light. It was taken during the last maximum of solar activity in 2001 with the instrument MDI onboard the spacecraft SOHO.

Different phenomena reveal themselves, depending on at which wavelength range the sun is viewed.  The upper pictures shown here were taken with the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT). They show the sun in the following wavelengths (from right to left): 17.1 nm, 28.4 nm, 19.5 nm, 30.4 nm (Source: SOHO (ESA & NASA)).

The image to the right shows the sun in visible light, in this case at some 600 nm. The image was taken during the last maximum of solar activity in 2001. It exhibits a number of spots - sunspots.
