Research Foci

The research projects of the Leibniz-Institute for Solar Physics are organized into three main areas. The solar magnetism is the common thread through, and the link between, these research foci:

  • Fine structure of the photosphere and chromosphere: This focus aims at understanding the granulation; magneto-convective processes in sunspots, and the structure, dynamics, and energetics of the outer solar atmosphere.
  • Global magnetic activity: This focus deals with the origin, evolution, and energetics of the magnetic field in the Sun and stars and with the coupling of the Sun-Earth system.
  • High resolution spectropolarimetry: This research focus aims at the elaboration of high-sensitivity techniques for imaging, spectroscopy, and polarimetry of the solar surface structures.
