Guided Tours at Schauinsland Observatory

Schauinsland Observatorium (2008)

During the summer months, free guided tours of the historic solar observatory on the Schauinsland mountain (1240 m above sea level) near Freiburg are offered on the "open days".  In 2017 these events took place at the following days:

  • Sunday, May 28
  • Sunday, June 18
  • Sunday, July 9
  • Sunday, August 6
  • Sunday, September 3
  • Sunday, October1

The dates for 2018 will be determined in late April or early May 2018 and then announced on this web page.

The tours take place even if the weather is bad.  They start at each full hour from 11:00 till 15:00 and last about one hour, so that the last tour ends around 16:00.

No reservation is needed, and no fees are charged. It is allowed to take pictures.

You will see solar observing instruments and obtain information about the Sun and solar research. There is plenty of time for questions.

Please note that on the open doors days the tours are usually given in German. If there is time, we are happy to answer questions in English, too. Groups of visitors can also arrange for individual tours on these or other days during the summer months (typically end of April till mid October, depending on snow).

How to reach the observatory

From the parking area near the mountain station of the cable car 'Schauinslandbahn', please walk about 15 minutes (1.1 km) in the direction of 'Rappeneckerhof' (see map below). The street has an asphalt pavement, but is closed for public traffic. A green gate on the left leads you to the observatory.

If you prefer public transportation, there are two choices:
(1) Use street car line 2 to Günterstal (final stop), then bus line 21 to the base station of the cable car, which brings you up to the top of the mountain. From the mountain station, walk down to the nearby parking lot  'Rotlache' and then follow the above directions.

(2) Take a train to Kirchzarten, and then bus 7215 ( in the direction Todtnau. Exit at bus stop Schauinsland/Halde. From there walk 3.1 km (ca. 40 min) to the observatory (2 km to the parking lot near the mountain station of the cable car and then another 1.1 km as above). On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays there are also busses going to the mountain station of the cable car.
