1st CASSDA School for Solar Observers - A week above the clouds


The 1st CASSDA School for young solar observers took place at the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife) on 20-25 April 2015.

Our purpose was to instruct students and young postdocs in the capabilities and operation of the German solar facilities at the observatory, by giving them the opportunity to 

- run real observations
 at GREGOR, the largest solar telescope in Europe

- calibrate GREGOR data by learning how to use the existing data pipelines 

- learn how to complement ground-based observations with space-based observations

- experience the observers’ life up the mountain for a week

Limited number of participants:

Due to limited accommodation, the number of participants is restricted to 14.


School Venue:

The activities of the CASSDA School will place in the seminar room at the Residencia and at the GREGOR & VTT Telescopes.



Students are required to bring their own laptop for the lectures on data calibration. It is strongly recommended to use a Linux or Mac OSX system. IDL (version 7.1 or higher) and a working SolarSoft ("sswidl") installation are needed, internet access and IDL licenses will be provided.

In order to minimize the installation efforts on site, participants are requested to download/install:

- the sswidl instrument packages hmi, mdi, aia, sot, iris
- JHelioviewer
- various sample datasets


Participants will stay in shared double rooms at the facilities offered by the Residencia at Observatorio del Teide.

The expenses for accommodation will be covered by the School.
