Equal Treatment at KIS

The Kiepenheuer-Institut für Sonnenphysik (KIS) aspires to gradually and effectively increase the percentage of female staff especially in the scientific and technical divisions. Therefore we try to improve the entrance conditions for women as well as the specific career advancement of the women employees of the institute.

Students and Apprentices 

In order to introduce young women specifically to technical and scientific subjects before they decide about their course of studies, the KIS takes part in activities which are particularly addressed to girls and young women, for rexample the Girls Day, the "Berufserkun­dungstage" (BOGY) or the test studies within the mentoring programmes of the University of Freiburg idea.

The KIS appreciates expressly all applications of female students and girls leaving school for a practical course or apprenticeship at the technical devision. Scientists, Students and PhD Students

The KIS offers to all female students of physics and related sciences both practical courses as well as the possibility to write diplomas under the support of the KIS. We offer practical support to ph.d. students and scientists and also contacts to networks and advancement programmes.

An overview of existing external offers and initiatives:


In accordance to the general equal treatment law "Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz"  (AGG), the remark agreement "Ausführungsvereinbarung Gleichstellung" (AV-Glei) and the recommendations for equalization of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft "Rahmenempfehlung zur Gleichstellung von Frauen und Männern in der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft" the KIS supports the equality of treatment of its male and female staff.

The Kiepenheuer-Institut aspires to arise the female percentage of staff in technical and scientific devisions and also gives job-related support to already employed female staff.  In this connection the KIS also takes the family background of its staff into consideration and supports them in the compatibility of job and family.

Responsibilities of the equality-assigned:

The equality-assigned has the responsibility to promote and supervise the equalization of women and men. Further more the equality-assigned is responsible for the removal of existing discrimination as well as the prevention of future discrimintion because of the sex at the KIS. He or she participates in all personal, organisational and social measures, has a direct right and obligation to report to the direction and reports annually to the foundation board and the scientific advisory board about the implementation of the targets. She or he is consulting and appeal instance for all staff of the institute, in case of for example:

  • Sex-specific disadvantage,
  • Sexual annoyance,
  • Problems of the compatibility of studies/job/graduation and family,
  • Re-entry in studies, graduation or job after maternity leave,
  • Requesting of scholarships.
